About
Hi, I'm Joel.
About Me
I'm someone who wears a lot of different hats. My educational background is in Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering, which kicked off my career as a software developer for:
a governmental body under the New York State, and
the largest privately-owned language services provider.
My role was to:
For (1), ensure that the workers' compensation, disability benefits and Paid Family Leave insurance records and transactions for all New York State employees flow seamlessly across systems, and that in case of a disaster in New York City (which unfortunately did happen in 2001), that the company's infrastructure could recover immediately with as simple as a turn-key operation.
For (2), ensure the langauge translation outsourcing platform that we programmed, and the translations database functions 24x7 for the company's 91 offices worldwide and for some 3000 translators.
Putting my early career aside, I've also followed in my family's footsteps as an entrepreneur running our children's toys manufacturing, exporting, and various other property-related business in Hong Kong.
During my off hours besides spending quality time with my family, I try to stay grounded through community service. It's important to me since young to give back, whether that's:
running portable library carts for an elderly home during my high school years,
walking dogs for animal shelters in New York, or
volunteering with children and seniors in Hong Kong.
I've also had the opportunity to help train new members and future leaders for various NGO's.
Most recently, I became certified in ESG planning. It's just one small step, but I'm passionate about doing whatever I can to make business practices more sustainable.
At the end of the day, I just try to stay humble, helpful and ethical in whatever I do.
Joel
